Mason Proper Come Out Of Hiding With “Olly Oxen Free” July 30, 2008

Mason Proper has been spending their summer valiantly working on their sophomore LP in Ann Arbor, Mich. and have just emerged from the trenches, relatively unscathed. Time on the road definitely did this band good as their second LP, Olly Oxen Free, is easily their best work to date. While you can yell “olly olly oxen free” until your lungs hurt, this won’t be coming out until September 23 when Dovecote Records (Ed Harcourt, Tim Williams) unleashes it on the public.

The album was co-produced by the band and Chris Coady, best known for his work with TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Blonde Redhead, and it remains eclectic and ambitious as ever. While it sparkles with a youthful exuberance [as the LP title suggests], it is firmly rooted in the band’s trademark dark and deranged fashion, sort of like if Edgar Allen Poe fronted an indie rock band.

The fivesome will be heading out on the road this fall so stay tuned for tour dates. In the meantime, you can head on over to their MySpace for a taste of what to expect: www.myspace.com/masonproper

If you’ve been wondering why it’s been a little quiet at The Ink Tanker as of late it’s because we’ve been up to our eyeballs gearing up for the HARD Summer Music Festival, which took place July 19 [hey, sorry, but as we get older it takes a bit longer to bounce back]. Now, that the all-night rager has come and gone, we can now catch our breath and revel in the memories of a truly epic night.

The first-ever event was held at the Shrine Expo Hall in downtown L.A. and headlined by scorching sets from N*E*R*D and MSTRKRFT. Over the course of 7 hours, Spank Rock, Steve Aoki, Jason Bentley, Mr. White, Destructo, Felli Fel, LA Riots, DJ Momjeans, Squeak E. Clean, Kill the Noise and Miles Dyson performed unbelievable sets to thousands of dancing die-hards. Italy’s The Bloody Beetroots closed out the bonanza with a full-throttle set that never let up from the first amped-up BPM until the clock struck 4 a.m. Meanwhile, Terry Kennedy and crew tore it up on the skate park throughout the night. We were blinded by the amount of bling in TK’s mouth and had to wear sunglasses just to watch him rail slide…

A special thanks to Eric, Meghan, Reba, Bill and all the others at Bill Silva productions, everyone at the Shrine and all those who helped in any way to make this a huge success. We could not have done it without you.

Stay tuned for details about the HARD Haunted Mansion, coming Halloween night 2008.

[If you love Pharrell, say I!]

[The Bloody Beetroots killed it! Way into the night...Or morning? Is 4 a.m. night or morn?]

[Who are those masked men? HINT: 4 a.m.]

["Hey look, it's a bigger me!" MSTRKRFT - we heart you]

[Nice cardigan Pharrell]

[What on earth is going on here with Spank Rock?]

[Jam Master Jamal - our favorite DJ and friend, with a sleepy and apparently snarky Juliana]

Gregory and the Hawk Prepares for Flight July 21, 2008

There is no Gregory in Gregory and the Hawk and as far as we know there is nary a hawk, but there is Meredith Godreau’s voice and really that’s all we need. Throw in layers of beautiful instrumentation and some experiments in noisy sonics and we are more than sold.

This Brooklyn beauty has been performing her acoustic-based songs up and down the East Coast for sometime now, has sold more than 15k of her self-released recordings and has done that all without a manager or the support of a label, although that’s just changed.

Like a scene from a movie about serendipity (but not that really bad movie with John Cusack), GATH was discovered by her label FatCat Records purely by accident: they were grabbing some drinks at a local NY watering hole where she happened to be playing. Quickly their chatter turned to silence as her music commanded their complete attention and a month later, she was in the studio.

Her FatCat debut, entitled Moenie and Kitchi, will be released October 7 and if you were a fan before prepare to be blown away. If you are just discovering her, you’re welcome. Head on over to her MySpace to check out “Grey Weather” from the upcoming album and you might just be inspired to whip out the ol’ acoustic and webcam and record your rendition. There’s already 17 pages of them inhabiting YouTube, see for yourself: GATH covers

With his U.S. tour coming to conclusion, and having just completed a video shoot for “Until Tomorrow Then,” you might think that Ed Harcourt would take advantage of some much-deserved time off to re-charge his batteries…but no, the prolific songwriter continues to forge ahead. The latest project? Scoring the film “S. Darko,” which of course is the sequel to the sci-fi cult favorite “Donnie Darko” you know, the movie with everybody’s favorite evil imaginary rabbit friend.

Taking place seven years after the original, “S. Darko” follows Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha, who has started experiencing strange visions herself. Watch out for the “S. Darko” in 2009. In the meantime, Ed also continues to work on his upcoming EP, which he hopes to finish by September, and if he gets the chance, he might be able to sneak a nap or two into his hectic schedule.

After crossing that little pond known as the Atlantic Ocean for a trip to England, Sea Wolf is preparing to take to the road with Okkervil River. The west coast tour kicks off in September, giving Alex Brown Church and company a month to recuperate from their U.K. shows and re-learn how to drive on the right side of the road. Now if only they could replace the touring van with a red double-decker bus…

In other exciting news, “You’re a Wolf” will be featured in an upcoming Chevy Malibu Hybrid commercial, so keep your eyes (and ears) open. In the meantime, you can mosey on over to VH1.com and check out the video for “You’re a Wolf,” which just began airing on the network’s “Nocturnal State” late-night video show.
