Superstar DJ extraordinaire Z-Trip will make his avatar in-game debut in one of the most anticipated video games to be unveiled this year: DJ Hero™. The new addition to the widely popular Guitar Hero™ franchise is offering a glimpse into the world of DJ culture, equipping gamers with an exclusive, innovative turntable controller, allowing them to take to the simulated decks and rule the party with original mixes. Music fans will be able to spin, mix and scratch along to 100+ songs in a range of genres spanning hip-hop, R&B, pop, rock and electronica.
E3 will welcome Z-Trip on June 3 for three sets, to demonstrate his turntable wizardry, and be on hand as DJ Hero™ is unveiled.
His “fiendishly clever collages” (Entertainment Weekly) have been feverishly traded and collected, while his most recent digital-only offering, “Victory Lap,” has already surpassed the 500,000 download mark. As godfather of mash-ups, it’s been noted: “DJ Z-Trip was remixing classic rock into hip-hop when Danger Mouse was still a cartoon character” (Rolling Stone). Sea Wolf Burrows In Omaha To Begin Work On Follow Up To Leaves In The River; Sophomore LP Due September On Dangerbird Records May 28, 2009

The debut album from Sea Wolf, Leaves in the River (Dangerbird Records), introduced the world to Alex Brown Church’s enchanting tales, calling to mind a novel, much like the one whose name he shares. The press praised his storytelling as cinematic, his music as “a blend of swirling melodies, literary balladry, and damaged art-rock composition,” and his characters eliciting the “sepia tones of old-timey photos.” His songs made waves at radio and MTV2, were featured in commercials and primetime television. He toured extensively. Shows sold out.
Lured by the multi-cultural aura of Montreal, Church relocated from L.A., took time off from touring and began generating content for a new record. Soaking in the foreign territory, he allowed his outsider’s perspective to guide his prose. “Being somewhere new, away from your home, you spend a lot of time observing and reflecting,” Church revealed, “And just the feeling of a new city can inspire new ideas, new places to explore in your music.”
The California-based songwriter has since burrowed himself and his band inside producer Mike Mogis’ A.R.C recording studios in Omaha. Best known as a member and producer of Bright Eyes, as well as his work with Rilo Kiley and M. Ward, Mogis was hand-picked after the two realized they shared a common vision for Church’s second full-length. “I had a pretty clear idea of how I wanted the record to sound, particularly the drums and vocals,” Church offered. “ I had a feeling Mike could do it based on the sounds of his previous records, and when we finally got on the phone about it, I just got a good feeling from him. He seemed to really get what I wanted to do.”
While Leaves was written as a solo artist, the album’s lush orchestrations were fully realized on the road with the help of a sextet. For these new sessions, Church is looking to encapsulate the dynamism that one can only create with a full band. “I wanted this record to capture the energy of the live show and the feel of the band as it is now. It’s going to be a bit fuller and more dynamic than Leaves.” Three of the touring members of Sea Wolf are currently alongside Church, contributing to the work in progress.
The as-yet-untitled sophomore album will be released in September on Dangerbird Records.

Enjoying a staycation here in Los Angeles this memorial weekend? Then come join us as Under the Radar presents the blissful triple-header of The Dears, Eulogies and Great Northern, this Saturday, May 23, at the Echoplex.
Eulogies have been on the road for the last month celebrating the recent release of their new LP, Here Anonymous on Dangerbird Records, which the Denver Post described as, “Galloping out of the gate with a sound so warm, fuzzy and enveloping you don’t have time to put up your guard.”
Despite having their tour bus stolen on the eve of their tour launch, The Dears, unphased, have been spreading their rock gospel across the country, with a live show that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says “balanced their magnificent melancholy and dreamy despair with a soulful rock ‘n’ roll dynamism.

KEXP Loves Kevin Devine May 18, 2009

Kevin Devine’s “Another Bag of Bones” has been chosen as KEXP’s “Song of the Day” today, May 18. The track was selected by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters who said:
“Today’s Song of the Day is just one of those songs that blend the personal, observational, and global: phrases like “collateral damage,” “cost of war,” “conflict diamond,” and “mission of identity” point to some larger message (i.e. how poorly we’ve made our time on earth), and indicate “the whole damn world turned inside out,” but there’s nothing here to be done about it — rather just let the whole thing burn. In the song, there’s an inherent relief from the burden of responsibility that we seek at times, even when we know that we shouldn’t sit back and let bad things happen. It’s a message echoed in the album’s next song, “Hand of God”: “Cut yourself some slack against a deck so stacked / I mean come on now, you’re just one man.” Rather than preach a particular message, Kevin Devine’s music does what good music should: it makes you rethink the things you’ve come to expect.”
Just before Kevin Devine and The Goddamn Band took off for their extensive cross-country journey, the band stopped by John Richards’ NYC studio to record a session for the venerable KEXP. Check out the videoed performance of Today’s “Song of the Day” as well as “I Could Be With Anyone” from his brand new LP, Brother’ Blood, out now on Favorite Gentlemen.
