Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz, the son of Jeff Castelaz and Jo Ann Thrailkill, brother of Grady Gallagher, passed away at home on Saturday, June 27 after a 13-month struggle against cancer. Services will be held Wednesday, July 1.

The magnificent six years and six days that were Pablo’s life touched many. His brave journey began when he was diagnosed in May 2008 with Wilms’ Tumor, a rare form of cancer. From the start, the family honestly and courageously documented Pablo’s fight on the PABLOg, a daily diary that, over the course of the year, has evolved into a destination for countless families facing similar difficult questions and challenges. Pablo’s life remains a beacon for hope, and has inspired an outpouring of goodwill and solace from an ever-growing community that spans the globe.

The Pablove Foundation was established shortly after Pablo was diagnosed and will continue to serve in his loving memory. The Foundation makes annual contributions to fund cancer research and treatment at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles’ Saban Research Institute, one of the top cancer research facilities in the United States. Pablove supports music and arts programs, and sponsors play rooms and activities in the soft tumor units at CHLA.

Jeff, Jo Ann and brother Grady would like to express their gratitude for the immeasurable love and support from their family and extended community. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please visit Pablove.org to make a donation.

silversunpickups_uk_colourIt’s been 11 years since an independent artist ranked #1 on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Songs chart (Everlast’s “What It’s Like” hit #1 in December 1998) and today, Silversun Pickups are the proud title-holders. Lead single “Panic Switch,” from Swoon, has impressively jumped over tracks from Linkin Park and Green Day, which were also in the running. This is truly a triumphant day for Dangerbird Records and the band, as only three songs by artists on independently distributed labels have reached this position: The Offspring’s “Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” [#1, July 1994], the aforementioned Everlast, and now Silversun Pickups this week.

As co-founder of Dangerbird Records, Jeff Castelaz appreciates the significance of infiltrating a predominantly major label-ruled chart. “’Panic Switch’ hitting number one proves that the moving parts of the rock and roll experience are in still good working order: great band, great song, great listener response,” he says.

The quartet is currently making their way across Europe and will return in August for festival appearances, as well as a string of newly announced tour dates (full itinerary below). Swoon continues to make strides at retail since its release April 14, already surpassing the 100k sales mark, with no signs of slowing down.

SILVERSUN PICKUPS LIVE SHOWS
August 2 – Jersey City, N.J. @ All Points West
August 3 – Baltimore, Md. @ Ram’s Head
August 4 – Richmond, Va. @ The National
August 9 – Chicago, Ill. @ Lollapalooza
August 28 – San Francisco, Calif. @ Outside Lands Festival
August 29 – San Diego, Calif. @ San Diego Street Scene

Lucha VaVoom
The glorious debut of mini Cassandro, a death-defying aerial pole dance routine by Gypsy Roze, and enough luchadores and ladies to make any jaded Angeleno want to strip down and jump in the ring: Lucha VaVOOM is back! Lucha VaVOOM’s 21st show, the summer spectacular “We Got The Beat,” will take place at the celebrated Mayan Theater in Los Angeles June 24 and 25. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketweb.com or at Wacko in Los Feliz or Brat in Santa Monica.

At this sexed-up, adrenaline-fueled collision of the finest in Mexican wrestling, titillating striptease and cunning linguistic, the mustached wonder Dirty Sanchez will disgust and delight the crowd with his dastardly and dirty deeds, while the fiery femme fatales the Poubelle Twins, will make their triumphant return to the ring. The world famous Cassandro will strut his stuff in the “Super Estrella” headline match and he’s brought along a friend – mini Cassandro, the first-ever mini exotico. The new mini will be born right before your very eyes and take on tiny superstar Ultimo Dragoncito, also making his Lucha VaVOOM debut.

As always, a dazzling array of talented burlesque beauties will ensure there’s never a dull moment. Bonita La Belle, Lucy Fur and Lux La Croix will take to the stage to take it off. Egyptian Princess and hula-hooper extraordinaire Karis will leave your jaw dropping and eyes popping with each twist of the show stopper’s hips. Somebody call the Guinness Book of World Records folks because the gravity-defying Gypsy Roze will attempt something that’s never been done before – an aerial pole dance routine.

The host with the most Blaine Capatch, along with Spongebob Squarepants’ Tom Kenny and stand-up comedian/“The Simpson’s” scribe Dana Gould, will offer up some hilarious play-by-play of the night’s action. Only Lucha VaVOOM has got the beat so make sure you come and get it this summer.
